I’m curious as to how some website owners pay the bills in a manner that doesn’t negatively impact the user viewing the content. I like oppo. I can read stuff and not be bothered by page-dominating ads. If oppo had passive ads sprinkled throughout the website, I would be cool with that. I get it, running a website isn’t free. I just wish websites wouldn’t determine what I get to view because they have to pay the bills. Here’s an example:
There were a couple of posts from oppo that I clicked into today and they took me to Jalopnik. A few sentences into the article my screen is taken over by an ad. Cool. The page gets closed and the article doesn’t get read. Sure, I could have waited for the ad to load so that I could continue but here’s the issue — I’m not always in a position where the bandwidth availble will load the ad quick enough to play or for me to click through it. Or I simply just get annoyed and close out of the website entirely. YouTube has this same ad feature but with some ads you don’t even get the choice to click though it.
So again, I get it. Running a website isn’t free. At what point is it acceptable for the website to interfere with user interaction? You want to show the world your content, right? Then why slam an ad in front of someone’s face? Now your content goes unseen for some. Is that really an acceptable ad strategy for a blog?

Also, I don’t mind the occasional pop-over ad on Jalopnik. I turned off adblock specifically for jalopnik.com to show my support. But the Pennzoil ads that block the article come up WAY TOO OFTEN. I let it play all the way through once in a while, but lately it seems like it’s every time I hit the front page. I’m getting pretty sick of it.

They’ll keep doing it until they see their audience shrink but that isn’t happening anytime soon as you can tell by the trolls on the FP and the increase in the generic content.

Banner ads and side ads I don’t find objectionable

A few days ago, boldride.com had a rage inducing video ad take up literally the entire screen, not just a small video and dimming the article behind it.

Ha, do you think their ad campaign might be coming off a little strong?

Yeah the Pennzoil ad is quite annoying. It almost makes me not want to buy their Syncromesh product annymore just because they’re prevent me from reading articles on the internet.

That little guy up in the right corner keeps me from having to be bothered by at least 80% of ads. Works really great when watching a show online that has commercials, cuts them right out.
